Alligator’s pedigree is a recipe for success. His father Noren, a grandson of Mourne (as is Laudanum), was a foundation TB sire in jumping horses. Noren was competed first in france, then bought by Zangersheide and jumped as Socrates Z; he then sold to the USA, where his career with Katie Monahan included 10 Grand Prix wins and being crowned Horse of the Year in 1982 – a year before I Love You won the same accolade (and the World Cup Final). I Love You was the most famous son of granddam Elyria, who also produced the international horse (and Indoor Puissance World Record Holder) Jolly Good.
In between the two, dam Nighty Fontaine is by the TB Dark Tiger – who has international winners in jumping and eventing. Nighty has also produced Frascator Mail, an international winning stallion, Frisco Mail (CSI at 7yrs), and is the grand-dam of Tresor Mail (see page), top French 4yr old eventer 2011.
Nighty Fontaine is 7/8ths TB, and Alligator himself is 77.35% TB – injecting a huge amount of blood (and suppleness, reactivity, and good temperament) into a breeding population.
He was placed in National Grand Prix at 7, and was France’s best stallion of his age group at 8 and 9. He won the Dublin Grand Prix, the Speed Derby at Hickstead, the Masters at Caen, the Derby at Vichy… he was a versatile jumper, and was crowned French Champion in 1999. Subsequently he was given the highest sport index of any French horse (not yet beaten or equalled).
Alligator’s most notorious daughter is Jalisca Solier, who with Steve Guerdat won the Grand Prix in Geneva in 2006, the World Cup in Vigo 2007, then team bronze, individual tenth at the Beijing Olympics, team gold at the European Championships 2009, and won the World Top 10 in 2010 (Geneva).
His offspring are known for their lovely heads, and show well. He had the 2003 Italian Champion foal, the 2004 French 3rd placed foal, the 2003 best yearling in Argentina and the 2009 best 3yr old colt in Argentina. His daughters are exceptional broodmares – for example Halliga Mail, dam of Quarto Mail; Jenna Mail, dam of Ornella Mail, Patrice Delaveau’s international mare; and Impala Mail, dam of Matahari Mail (GP winner).
