What is semen freezing?

Also known as cryopreservation, semen freezing involves the freezing of semen to a temperature of -196 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the sperm cells are frozen in a static but viable state and will not degrade or perish providing correct storage and handling. When thawed, the semen is re-awakened to its pre-frozen form capable of fertilisation, for some stallions comparable to chilled semen, when frozen, thawed and inseminated correctly.

Semen Freezing for UK Use – Quick & Easy Semen Banking 

Semen freezing for UK use is a quick and easy method of semen collection and preservation for the domestic market

Pending clear pre-entry health tests (please see page x), stallions can come on centre and collect as little or as much semen as you would like. Most owners aim to collect around 30 doses and stallions are typically with us for 2 weeks to do this.

 

 

Semen Freezing for Worldwide Export - Open Up An International Semen Market 

Worldwide semen freezing allows you to access the international market for equine semen. Each year, we carry out a vast number of international shipments to countries worldwide where import legislation is in place.

Stallions must undergo the same pre-entry health tests as UK use stallions (see page x for more details). Once the health tests are back and pending negative results, stallions can then come on centre. Here they undergo several test freezes to ensure semen quality is acceptable. Once we are happy with the semen quality, the stallions then start their on-centre export health testing. The exact health tests required depends upon the countries the stallion is freezing for but as a guide, the testing is typically carried out over a period just over 30 days.

For most international countries, semen doesn’t qualify for export until day 30 of the stallion’s residence. This means stallions are typically with us for 6 to 8 weeks for international semen freezing depending on the amount of semen required and the countries we are freezing for.  

 

 

Semen Freezing for UK & EU Use – Simple Method of Freezing for An Export Market 

Semen freezing for UK and EU opens an export market for your stallion without the constraints of international semen freezing (see below). 

 

Under our guidance, stallions undergo a set of pre-collection health tests one week apart. They can then come on centre and collect as little or as much semen as you would like.

Once you have enough semen, the stallion is free to leave the centre. They must then carry out the same health tests, 1 week apart, after leaving the collection centre with the testing under our guidance. Once the health tests are all back and results negative, the semen EU export qualification is complete, and the semen can be sent and used within the EU.
